What makes a generation?

AGenerationis a group of people who were born at the same time and grew up in the same place. People in this “birth cohort” exhibit similar characteristics, likes, and values throughout their lives. At the Center for Generational Kinetics, we believe that generations are not a box; Instead, they are powerful pointers that show you where to start connecting and influencing people of different ages. There are big differences between generations and it is important to know in which years each generation begins and ends. We are specialists in the relationship between geography and generations. Millennials, for example, are the most enduring generation in the world. However, we still see important differences between millennials who grew up in an urban environment and those who grew up in a rural environment or are moving to a new country.

Olderbaby boomersthey saw the Korean and Vietnam wars, and the older members of that generation also took part in the latter.

The Jones generation had Watergate, the 1979 oil embargo, and AIDS, which many saw as a loss of confidence in government and other institutions.

Members of Generation X are "the last Americans who can fold a newspaper, understand a joke, and listen to a dirty story without going insane," Vanity Fair once wrote.

But Generation X is also described as the first "turnkey" kids, exposed to daycare and divorce that left them cautious and pragmatic.

During a brief reprieve, the Xennials went to school before Columbine and found jobs before the recession hit.

Millennials learned about pop culture from cable TV, entered the workforce at the height of the recession, and were reluctant to leave home and marry, earning them a reputation for "slow starts." They were old enough to understand the September 11 attacks, helped elect the country's first black president, and are the second largest generation of voters after the baby boomers.

Gen Z will have more money than any previous generation, but also more school debt. Donald Trump may be the first American President you've ever met.

By the way, not everyone believes in the concept of generations.

An article in Slate magazine argued that there was no scientific evidence for the different characteristics of the generations and that the concepts were arbitrary, flawed and stereotyped.

“Generations and generation gaps are fascinating and inherently attractive concepts. Therefore, the media will continue to report on it, academics will publish, specialists will speak and advisers will be sold to buyers,” he said.

"But science says that generations, despite their popularity, just don't exist." Length of a social generation

generation calculations

The three main trends shaping generations are education, technology and business. For example, many baby boomers have a parenting philosophy of, “We want to make it easier for our kids than it was for us.” That philosophy, in turn, helped create and reinforce millennial entitlement, which is a hotly debated topic today.
