What makes a generation?

AGenerationis a group of people who were born at the same time and grew up in the same place. People in this “birth cohort” exhibit similar characteristics, likes, and values throughout their lives. At the Center for Generational Kinetics, we believe that generations are not a box; Instead, they are powerful pointers that show you where to start connecting and influencing people of different ages. There are big differences between generations and it is important to know in which years each generation begins and ends. We are specialists in the relationship between geography and generations. Millennials, for example, are the most enduring generation in the world. However, we still see important differences between millennials who grew up in an urban environment and those who grew up in a rural environment or are moving to a new country.

Olderbaby boomersthey saw the Korean and Vietnam wars, and the older members of that generation also took part in the latter.

The Jones generation had Watergate, the 1979 oil embargo, and AIDS, which many saw as a loss of confidence in government and other institutions.

Members of Generation X are "the last Americans who can fold a newspaper, understand a joke, and listen to a dirty story without going insane," Vanity Fair once wrote.

But Generation X is also described as the first "turnkey" kids, exposed to daycare and divorce that left them cautious and pragmatic.

During a brief reprieve, the Xennials went to school before Columbine and found jobs before the recession hit.

Millennials learned about pop culture from cable TV, entered the workforce at the height of the recession, and were reluctant to leave home and marry, earning them a reputation for "slow starts." They were old enough to understand the September 11 attacks, helped elect the country's first black president, and are the second largest generation of voters after the baby boomers.

Gen Z will have more money than any previous generation, but also more school debt. Donald Trump may be the first American President you've ever met.

By the way, not everyone believes in the concept of generations.

An article in Slate magazine argued that there was no scientific evidence for the different characteristics of the generations and that the concepts were arbitrary, flawed and stereotyped.

“Generations and generation gaps are fascinating and inherently attractive concepts. Therefore, the media will continue to report on it, academics will publish, specialists will speak and advisers will be sold to buyers,” he said.

"But science says that generations, despite their popularity, just don't exist." Length of a social generation

generation calculations

As you can see, calculating how long a generation lasts is not an exact science and there is no simple formula. If you look at the generally accepted generations, it can be said that in the last 100 years between 1920 and 2020 there have been 6 generations: GI Generation, Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials and Generation Z.

Their parents (Generation X) know best how to get along with them.

Australian social researcher Mark McCrindle recently coined the term alpha generation to describe the generation born between 2010 and 2020.

He argues that as the world progresses, it makes sense to reduce the generational limit to a maximum of 15 years. McCrindle also hopes that this naming strategy will continue, with a new generation being successively named after letters of the Greek alphabet every 15 years.

Why are millennials getting so much attention right now?

In the past two years, Millennials have become the largest generation of the US workforce. Millennials are also the fastest growing generation of customers on the market and bring the highest lifetime value. Additionally, millennials display different attitudes towards employment, sales and marketing that challenge many traditional strategies and approaches. No wonder everyone is talking about millennials, but are they really any different? How and why are they different? What can entrepreneurs, merchants, politicians, educators and parents do?

One of the best experiences a generation shares is the technology they grew up with.

Boomers went through childhood when TV took overGeneration XWe saw computers enter the scene and millennials born into the internet age.

More recently members ofonce againo Gen Z are the first to grow up with smartphones, said Dr. Jean Twenge in her bookonce again:Why today's super-connected kids are growing up less rebellious, more tolerant, less happy, and totally unprepared for adulthood, and what that means for the rest of us.

Lost in social media and texting, they're spending less time with personal friends, which can leave them feeling anxious or lonely, experts like Twenge say.

What are the three most important trends that shape generations?

The three main trends shaping generations are education, technology and business. For example, many baby boomers have a parenting philosophy of, “We want to make it easier for our kids than it was for us.” That philosophy, in turn, helped create and reinforce millennial entitlement, which is a hotly debated topic today.
