Design and construction quality
Thanks to Apple, which has given the Air a major makeover over the past few years, it's pretty easy to tell these two devices apart just by looking at them. HeiPad 9. Generation (2021)It retains the classic design with bezels around the 10.2-inch screen, with the bottom one housing the Touch ID-enabled home button (the 10th-gen iPad has now joined the home-button-less club, so the iPad -9th generation is now the only iPad with a home button). You won't find a home buttoniPad Air (2022), but that doesn't mean you have Face ID; Instead, a fingerprint sensor has been cleverly placed in the power button on the top edge. Since there's no face ID, there's no need for a notch, so the Air has an uninterrupted 10.9-inch screen.
Both iPads have a single main camera on the back and another on the front, although the iPad Airs fare better (more on that below). The iPad (2021) is a bit odd, still offering a 3.5mm headphone jack and Lightning connector; In fact, it's the last of the current generation to feature Lightning, like the iPad Air (2022) and all other iPad models. You have now switched to USB-C.
You get stereo speakers on the bottom edge of the iPad (2021), while its pricier sibling is blessed with the same, but on both ends. Features and Specifications
While they are iPads and can do most things iPad, when it comes to components there are some significant differences to be aware of.

As you may have noticed, the iPad Air has a larger 10.9-inch display compared to the 10.2-inch panel on the 9th-gen iPad (the 10th-gen model has a 10-inch display). .9 inches). The Air offering is also fully laminated, meaning there's no air gap between the glass panel and the digitizer underneath, giving you the feeling of touching real pixels. That's not a problem for anyone who wants the iPad (2021) though, as you might not even notice the difference unless you're using them side-by-side or have a fully laminated screen on your current iPad.
Both offer the same 2360 x 1640 resolution with 264 ppi, 500 nits of brightness and True Tone technology. So they are very similar to what they present to the eye. The iPad Air (2022) has an anti-reflective coating and a higher color gamut, but even those are pretty marginal gains, especially considering the price difference.
processor and memory
Where the iPad Air (2022) has a major advantage is in its processing power. Apple recently updated the Air to include the M1 processor, which is the same one that powers the iPad Pro and some Macs. This is a serious piece of silicon and may be too powerful for what most people do with an iPad. But whether you're into digital art, playing graphics-intensive games, or just want a really powerful device that should last for years, the Air certainly makes a compelling case in its own right.
The iPad (2021) is not a stumbling block, with the A13 Bionic chip at its core it is more than capable of meeting the typical demands that users place on an iPad. After all, that was the processor powering the iPhone 11 Pro Max, so it packs a punch. No, you won't be smoking the M1, but if you just want to stream Netflix, write some documents, video call your family, or play less intense games, you'll have no problem doing that on the iPad (2021).
Storage options are the same on both devices, with the cheaper model sitting at 64GB (which feels a little tight in this day and age) or you can step up to a much more spacious 256GB for a price bump. Quick tip: if you intend to take full advantage of the on-air cameras, 64GB will run out very quickly unless you also invest in iCloud storage for your photos.
Cameras
While we're not the biggest fans of using an iPad as a camera, you can certainly get decent results with either model. The iPad (2021) comes with an 8 MP, F/2.4 widescreen rear camera that can use HDR for photos and record video up to 1080p at 30 fps. It's a bit better on the Air, which has a 12-megapixel f/1.8 widescreen camera that has Smart HDR 3 and can go up to 4K at 60fps.
The front cameras are much more similar in their specs, as they both feature a 12 MP, f/2.4 Ultra Wide unit capable of recording video at up to 1080p at 60 fps. Center Stage is another shared feature, with the smart software making sure you stay in the middle of a video call even when you're on the go. If you just want one iPad for family video calls and looking good doing it, there's nothing that can separate the two devices.
connectivity
The specs are more in favor of the Air when it comes to being online. Wi-Fi 6 is the order of the day, while the iPad (2021) stays on Wi-Fi 5. Well here's something you should know. Unless you have upgraded your home router to one that supports Wi-Fi 6, there will be little difference in speed. Keep that in mind. Bluetooth is better on the Air, with its 5.0 connection proving to be slightly stronger than the iPad's 4.2. However, both will connect to speakers and headphones.
If you opt for a cellular version of the Air, you can access 5G networks (if your SIM card and network plan support it), while the low iPad still uses 4G networks.

We generally recommend going for the model with more storage, 64GB might be a bit tight, especially if you don't have iCloud to store photos, music and other information from your device. In that case, you can still save money by choosing the 256GB iPad WiFi 9th Gen ($459 / £519) over the 64GB iPad Air ($599 / £669). If the extra storage is worth more than the fastest processor and rear camera, then sticking with the standard iPad makes sense.

Verdict
The iPad Air is an excellent, modern take on Apple's vision for a tablet. It's very fast thanks to the M1 processor, looks good and has a lot of future-proofing built in. Of course, all this has its price, which has risen sharply in recent years. We generally don't recommend 64GB iPads as you're more likely to run into storage issues if you intend to use them for a while. With that in mind, the Air actually starts at $749 / £849 (it was £719) for the 256GB version, making it an expensive device.
The iPad (9th gen), on the other hand, costs $479/£549 (was £459) for the 256GB version and offers plenty of power and features, including support for the cheaper version of the Apple Pencil. If you don't need the extra power of the Air and don't mind having a home button on the front - you might even prefer it - then we still think this is one of the best deals in Apple's catalogue.

The iPad Pro line has a faster refresh rate of up to 120Hz (called ProMotion), a higher max brightness level, and the larger iPad Pro uses mini-LED technology for a better picture, which Apple calls a Liquid Retina XDR display.
