What is Proventil?
Proventil is a bronchodilator that relaxes the muscles in the airways and increases airflow to the lungs.
Proventil HFA is used to treat or prevent bronchospasm in patients with reversible obstructive pulmonary disease. It is also used for preventionExercise-induced bronchospasm.
Proventil is intended for use in adults and children from 4 years of age.
Hints
It is important to always have Proventil on hand. Refill your prescription before you run out of medication completely. Continue to use any other medications prescribed by your doctor.
Talk to your doctor if any of your asthma medications aren't working as well at treating or preventing attacks. If it seems like you may need to take more of your medication within 24 hours, talk to your doctor. An increased need for Proventil can be an early sign of a severe asthma attack.
See an ambulance or call the poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Albuterol overdose can be fatal. Extreme heat can cause the Proventil HFA canister to explode. Don't keep your inhaler in the car on a hot day. Do not throw an empty container into an open flame.
Before taking this medicine
You should not use Proventil if you are allergic to salbutamol.
Salbutamol can increase the risk of death or hospitalization in people with asthma. However, the risk in people with obstructive pulmonary disease or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is unknown.

However, uncontrolled asthma during pregnancy can increase the risk of premature birth, low birth weight, or eclampsia (dangerously high blood pressure that can cause medical problems for both mother and child). The benefit of preventing bronchospasm may outweigh any risk to the baby.
If you are pregnant, your name may be included in a pregnancy registry to track the effects of albuterol on your baby.
It may not be safe to breastfeed while using Proventil. Ask your doctor about risks.
Proventil is not approved for use by persons under the age of 4.
